Holy Week, the highpoint of the Lenten preparation for Easter, begins with Palm (or Passion) Sunday. In Medjugorje, the liturgy of Passion Sunday begins with the reading of the Gospel and the blessing of the branches, and is followed by a procession from the site of the old parish church, culminating with the celebration of Holy Mass in the current Parish Church.
The liturgy was presided over by the Parish Priest, Fr. Ivan Sesar, assisted by Fr. Karlo Lovric and Fr. Boze Milic, and the parish choir, under the direction of Sr. Slavica Kozul, sang the Passion. Numerous pilgrims from the neighbouring areas, and from abroad, joined with the parishioners. About 4000 pilgrims came to Medjugorje for the Palm Sunday. Croatian pilgrims came from all parts of the country, and from abroad, the most numerous were Italians, Austrians, Germans and the Irish. Large groups came also from South Africa, Korea, the USA, Canada, France and Belgium. Every language group celebrated the Palm Sunday Liturgy in its own language.
Also this year Holy Triduum of the Holy Week has ghatered pilgrims from all the world here in Međugorje. A large number of pilgrims of various linguistic groups has newly rendered necessary that the Liturgy and the Way of the Cross were carried out by groups.
On Holy Thursday the Liturgy in the Parish Church has been presided by Fra Tomislav Pervan and concelebrated by 28 priest, while the night Adoration has been presided by Fra Ljubo Kurtović.
On Holy Friday the groups of pilgrims has headed on the Križevac for the Way of the Cross every half-hour: the first group has started on 6:00 am, and last – the most numerous one of Croatian language – at 11:00 am. The Liturgy of the Holy Friday has been presided by parish priest Fra Ivan Sesar. Fra Bože Milić and fra Karlo Lovrić have sung the Passion according to John accompanied by the Great parish choir under the direction of Sister Slavica Kožul.
On Saturday, different language groups celebrated the Easter Liturgy of the Word during the afternoon, and in the evening they joined the parishioners for the Easter Vigil and Adoration in the Parish church.
The Easter Vigil at 8.00 pm has been presided by Ljubo Kurtović and concelebrated by 45 priets.
The hour of night Adoration has been presided by Fra Svetozar Kraljević.
